Safety Vs Straight Vs Multi-Blade Razors

First, before we get into the debate of the safety razor vs. straight razor vs. multi-blade razor, a little refresher on terminology so we know what we are talking about.

Safety Razor

A Double Edge Safety Razor uses double-edge blades and will have either a straight edge or a comb-edge on each side.

Straight Razor

Straight Razors use single-edge blades and can either be fixed, which means they need to be sharpened, or as a 'shavette', which means it has a changeable single-edge blade.

Multi-blade Razor

Multi-blade razors use multiple-blade cartridges.

A little history

Straight blades have been around for centuries. Due to the nature of fixed blade straight razors and the need to sharpen them on a leather strop, an update to the razor was developed, called a shavette. Shavette's use an interchangeabledisposable razor blade.

Safety blades have been around since about the 1900s. The modern versions of these classics are solidly built.

Multi-blade of today require the use of cartridges. They are typically plastic, but some companies have taken the multi-blade body designs and crafted upscale models from chrome, gold-plating, wood, and more.

The straight blade has only one moving part, the blade that swivel open and closed. The bodies are typically wood, metal, or other material. A safety blade can either have a butterfly opening where the blade is set in place or the handle unscrews from the head, which is taken apart to place the razor blade. The razors are typically all metal, such as chrome, gold-plating, and such, but the handles can be made from wood, or other upscale material. Looked after properly, a straight razor or a modern safety razor (not the multi-blade) can last a lifetime and provide an excellent shave throughout its' life. Multi-blade razors might last a few years.

Safety razors and straight razors take a little practice and some skill to get good results. A little patience will go a long way with these razors. No patience will give you a rough shave and war wounds (nicks, cuts). Multi-blade razors take the learning curve out of the picture because of their ease of use.

Multi-blades and safety blades are pretty much ready to go at any time. Straight blades (fixed blade), on the other hand, requires a little preparation, like whetting on a leather strop before use. Straight blades (shavettes), like safety blades are ready to go without the whetting requirement.

Multi-blade cartridges can be EXPENSIVE. Compare your average multi-blade cartridges with that of the double-edge razor blade or the single-edge razor blade. Let's do some simple math. If you shave eight times every two weeks, (say you like stubble on your casual Fridays) that means a new safety blade or cartridge every two weeks. After a month, the safety razor costs $1.60, the cartridge costs you $8. In a year, you pay 12 x $1.60 = 19.80 for safety razors. Compare that to the 12 x $8 = $96 and you will notice that safety razors save you $96 - 19.80 = $76.20 in just one year. Less money and a better shave - easy isn't it?

When multi-blade razors cut many perform what they call 'lift and cut'. This basically pulls the whisker out from the skin before cutting it. This gives a really smooth finish, but the whisker can retreat beneath the skin surface, thus causing ingrown hairs. The double-edge razor blade nor the single-edge razor blade can do this, since they are straight cuts.

Multi-blade razors use plastic cartridges, which house the multiple blades. When disposed of, these go into the landfill and sit there. Multi-blade razor manufacturers are also developing the latest and greatest blades for their razors. Straight razors and safety razors have no latest and greatest. They reached their peak around 1930. You cannot make them better. Tell me again, why do I need 4 or 5 blades in a cartridge?

For the manly men, when using straight razors or safety razors, you are scraping off stubble with three inches of exceedingly sharp, unguarded, polished steel. Skill, patience and dexterity are required. Multiple-blades, puhlease!

More men are picking up the wet shaving skill as part of their daily routine. Put down that 'got to have it because THEY said so' razor with 3, 4 or 5 blades, and get yourself a good safety razor or straight razor and upgrade your shaving experience.
