7 Most Important Ingredients in Skin Care

After watching this video you should be more familiar with the most important active ingredients in your skin care routine. If you follow me on IG, you know that I always recommend to mix it up and it is OK to use products across different skin lines. Its good to rotate between lines but also switch up the individual products that you are using on a daily and nightly basis. My goal is to educate you so you can make informed decisions yourself about what skincare products are best for you. I'm not here o sell any products and I am not sponsored by any companies. Many ask me to simply list products I recommend but I want you to watch the entire video and understand how these ingredients affect skin biology. Not just simply list them and have you buy them. Our skin is constantly changing depending on the time of year, what we are exposed to, our diet, etc. and your skincare needs will often change. Knowing this will empower you to pick your favorite products for yourself. Again, you don't have to have ALL these ingredients and I don't want anyone to feel stressed that you need EVERY individual ingredient BUT we do what we can and sometimes if we are limited by budget, time, etc, its imp to prioritize what products we use..

I earned my Medical Degree from UC Irvine and completed my residency in Dermatology at UCLA. Upon completing my residency, I joined the full-time faculty at UCLA as a Clinical Instructor and Professor in Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery. I then went on to complete advanced fellowship training in Dermatologic Surgery at UC Davis and Cosmetic Dermatology at the Laser and Skin Surgery Center of Northern California with world-renowned expert, Dr. Suzanne Kilmer. After fellowship, I was appointed the Director of Dermatologic Surgery at the Laser & Skin Surgery Center of Northern California where I remained active in clinical trials and have been on the forefront of the latest advances in aesthetics and dermatology. As an Orange County native, I love the SoCal community and currently enjoy being a Dermatologist in Newport Beach, CA.

My areas of expertise include cosmetic dermatology with a focus on injectable neuromodulators (Botox, Dysport, Xeomin), as well as dermal fillers (Juvederm, Voluma, Volbella, Vollure, Sculptra, Restylane, Belotero, and Radiesse). In addition, I travel nationally and internationally where I teach other physicians injection techniques and about the latest advances in dermatology. I am highly-trained in the use of lasers and energy-based devices to treat all aspects of photoaging, including fine lines, wrinkles, skin laxity, brown spots and facial vessels. I offer a comprehensive approach to body contouring with the use of minimally-invasive procedures. In addition, I specialize in Dermatologic Surgery including Mohs micrographic surgery, blepharoplasty, skin cancer excisions, sclerotherapy, surgical earlobe repair and cosmetic tattoo excisions.

  3. Please don’t apologize for giving us the scientific jargon of how these ingredients work. It’s good to know there’s actual science between skincare because I’ve had so many ridicule my skincare efforts. I need the science behind it all to defend my skincare products to them. They think it’s just “snake oil”.
    Thank you ! ๐Ÿ˜Š

  5. Hey, such a super video as always and interesting questions and answers below. You're going to laugh but my sister in law and myself talk all the time about figuring out a way to come and see you from Ontario Canada. If the guys mention travel we are like - hey why don't we go to Laguna beach. Lol. You come up in our conversations often.
We appreciate you. Thanks for your knowledge and recommendations and great spirit.๐Ÿ’•

  10. This was a wonderful video, Dr. Kappel!!! I love that you give us all the details about the ingredients and how they work. That’s what I want to learn about. I use medical grade skincare myself and my skin has never looked better. ❤️. What are your thoughts on azealic acid and salycilic acids? Are they similar to glycolic acid? Thank you!

  12. In the evening, in what order do you apply tretinoin (in my case) and the sunscreen. Would love to know since I am on my iPad for several hours. Thanks for the video.

  14. Is the microspheres gel formulation of tretinoin (Retin A Micro) as strong as the cream formulation (Retin A cream) if the percentage is the same? I've been using 0.05% (1 year), then 0.1% of tretinoin microspheres gel for past 3 years and never get irritation, even if I smear a ton of it on, but I'm not sure if it is doing anything dramatic in terms of improving my skin either. Is this the best vehicle for me? Would the cream be more effective at the same 0.1% strength?

  16. Youre awesome!! I only subscribe to dermatologists on youtube when it comes to skincare and you are by far the one who educates your viewers the most. And do not ever apologize for being to scientific about your information because you explain it in lay mans terms and makes it so easy to digest and retain. Im an ingredient nazi so I love it. Im majoring in Nutrition in school (Im 50..youre never too old to learn right) and when i explain things to people I do the same thing. I do have a question..is there a substitute for retinol. Ive been having issues with anything containing it. Some of my customers do as well. Ive read about Bakuchiol. Can you give any recommendations for this?

  17. I’d love it if you could do a whole video talking about your favourite retinols, how often you use them, and if you lake them with other serums.

  20. Love the video. Can you please elaborate on what you mean by "medical grade" skincare? What constitutes medical grade? Is it an ingredient? A formula? Also, you mentioned FDA approved skin care and I thought FDA only approved drugs (like sunscreen, tretinoin etc.) I would love to get more information on this subject. thanks!!

  29. Dr. Kappel,
I am an injector in Brazil and I have never seen such an explanatory class in the smallest detail, both scientific and clinical. Not even when I did my postgraduate degree in aesthetics.
