Is Botulinum toxin injection a safe and cost effective treatment for wrinkles? - Dr. Rajdeep Mysore

Botulinum toxin has been used in the treatment of several muscular problems. It was initially used by an ophthalmic surgeon to treat squint that occurred due to the paralysis of the eye muscles. Subsequently it was found that wrinkles in this area also known as crow’s feet, wrinkles we get in around the eyes. It was found that when treated for squint the wrinkles in that area disappear. Later it came to be known that the botulinum toxin in smaller doses could be used for the upper facial muscles. These are the muscles that cause a person to look old and hence it started using more and more in cosmetic practice. The question is why the word toxin is used in it. Many people are afraid that is it a safe injection. The doses required for any sort of toxicity are at least 1000 times more than the dose used in cosmetic practice. A dose of about 3 to 4 hundred units of botox which is the most popular botulinum toxin is used to treat children with muscular spasms called as cerebral palsy whereas in cosmetic procedures we hardly use about 60 to 80 units at the maximum. Therefore the safety of botulinum toxin has been well establishes. It has been used for over 17 to 20 years for more than 35 million people all over the world. This is one of the safest procedures and we can give a guarantee that there will be an improvement for wrinkles unlike other procedures and creams which are used for anti-ageing.
